Every state and DC requires an LLC or corporation to keep a registered agent at an in-state street address, staffed during business hours, to receive lawsuits and official mail. The rule is universal; the forms, portals and yearly calendars are not. Pick your state for its page, official portal link and what else is due there.
Each page: what the state requires, who can serve, the official portal, and how the agent fits that state's compliance calendar.
The same four things in every state. A commercial agent is paid to do them every business day; a friend or your own front desk does them until the first trip out of town.
Allowed in general if you have an in-state street address and are reliably there. Free, but the address is public and a process server can arrive in front of customers.
Works until they move, change jobs, or sign for a summons and forget to mention it. The lawsuit does not pause because the agent was a favour.
A staffed office whose only job is to be there. Notices scanned the day they arrive, your home address off the registry, each state's calendar tracked. Ours is $74.25 a year.
Not legal advice. Each state sets its own eligibility details; they are on the official portal linked from every state page. Wondering whether a letter is real? Free notice triage.

Starting fresh? Form the LLC and add the agent in the same order, so the articles list a compliant address from the first filing.
Form my LLCYes. All 50 states and the District of Columbia require an LLC or corporation to continuously maintain a registered agent with a physical street address in that state, available during business hours, to receive service of process and official mail.
One per state where the company is formed or registered as a foreign entity. Each of those states wants an agent with an address inside its own borders. Our price is the same in every state, so multi-state companies pay per state, not per surprise.
Alabama, Arizona, Missouri, New Mexico, Ohio, South Carolina ask LLCs for no yearly state report. The registered-agent requirement is separate and applies in all of them, every day the company exists.
The registered-agent requirements described are the ones every state shares. Annual-report names, fees and dates come from each state's own filing site, verified 2026-09-01. State-specific change-of-agent forms, fees and statutes are linked to the official portal, not reprinted.
