What Florida requires of a registered agent

Florida follows the rule every state and DC share: an LLC or corporation must continuously maintain a registered agent, and that agent must have a physical street address in Florida (a registered office) where someone is available during normal business hours. The agent's job is to accept service of process, the papers that start a lawsuit, and official mail from the state, then get them to you fast.

A P.O. box or a virtual mailbox is not a registered office.
The agent's name and Florida address are public record on the state's business registry.
When the agent moves, quits or the address changes, Florida expects a filing to update the record. Letting it lapse is treated as having no agent.

Yourself

Allowed in general if you have a Florida street address and are reliably there in business hours. Free, but your address becomes public record, a process server can arrive in front of customers, and every trip out of town is a gap in coverage.

A friend, relative or employee

Works until it doesn't: they move, change jobs, or sign for a summons and forget to mention it. The lawsuit does not pause because the agent was a favour. You also need their Florida address on the public record.
