Quick answer
As of 2026-09-08
A DUNS number is a free nine-digit Dun & Bradstreet identifier that anchors your business credit file. An EIN is the IRS tax ID; they are unrelated. Your LLC needs a DUNS for business credit, not taxes or federal awards.
Sources: D&B, Get a D-U-N-S Number · IRS, Employer Identification Number · GSA, switch to Unique Entity ID. Dun & Bradstreet, PAYDEX and SAM.gov are referenced for information only and are not affiliated with or endorsed by Vermilion Vitez; this guide is education, not legal, tax or credit advice.
Here is what you could lose without one. A supplier decides whether to give your LLC net-30 terms by pulling its Dun & Bradstreet file. An equipment lender does the same before it decides whether the company can carry a payment on its own. If there is no file, or a file with an old address and no payment history, the decision falls back on the only thing they can read: your personal credit and your personal guarantee. The LLC you formed to keep business debt off the household ends up right back on it.
All four figures are Dun & Bradstreet’s own, from dnb.com/duns/get-a-duns, checked 2026-09-08. D&B charges for the expedited option and for credit-monitoring products; the number itself is free.
DUNS vs EIN vs federal tax ID
The single most common search that lands people here is DUNS vs EIN, and the honest answer is that they are not two versions of the same thing. “Federal tax ID” and “EIN” are the same number. A DUNS number is a different number from a different organization for a different purpose.
| Question | EIN (federal tax ID) | DUNS number |
|---|---|---|
| Who issues it | The IRS (a federal agency) | Dun & Bradstreet (a private company) |
| Format | 9 digits, e.g. 12-3456789 | 9 digits |
| What it is for | Tax filing and reporting; banks ask for it to open an account | Links to your D&B business credit file; lenders, suppliers and partners use it to evaluate the business |
| Cost | Free, directly from the IRS | Free, directly from D&B (paid expedite optional) |
| Does one create the other? | No | No |
| Required to operate? | Yes for most LLCs with employees, and banks expect it | No. D&B says it is not required to operate a business |
| Used by SAM.gov / federal awards? | Yes, as part of registration | No, replaced by the Unique Entity ID on April 4, 2022 |
Sources, checked 2026-09-08: IRS Instructions for Form SS-4 (“An EIN is a 9-digit number (for example, 12-3456789)”); IRS EIN page (“You can get an EIN for free directly from the IRS in minutes”); D&B, What is a D-U-N-S Number (“a unique nine-digit identifier that links to your Dun & Bradstreet business credit file”; “isn’t required to operate a business”); GSA news release.
The myth: “DUNS and EIN are the same thing,” or its cousin, “the IRS issues DUNS numbers.” Neither is true. The IRS has no DUNS database, and D&B has no tax authority. If you searched irs duns number, the IRS page you want is the EIN page.
Takeaway: an EIN gets the LLC a tax identity and a bank account; a DUNS number gets it a credit file. You will end up wanting both, in that order.
Are DUNS numbers still used?
Yes for business credit. No for federal contracting. Both halves matter, because the second half is where people get burned.
What changed on April 4, 2022
Until 2022, registering in SAM.gov to bid on federal contracts or apply for federal grants meant getting a DUNS number first. GSA’s own announcement is unambiguous: “On Monday, April 4, 2022, SAM.gov and all other General Services Administration (GSA) systems will switch to the new Unique Entity ID (SAM) as the authoritative government entity identifier,” and “SAM.gov and other GSA systems will no longer use the DUNS number for identifying entities.” Today SAM.gov states that a Unique Entity ID is assigned during registration, or can be requested on its own with just a legal business name and physical address.
The second myth: “DUNS is dead since 2022.” Only the federal-award use ended. Dun & Bradstreet still issues DUNS numbers, still builds credit files around them, and lenders and suppliers still pull those files. If you show up to SAM.gov with a DUNS number, it does not help you; if you show up to a lender without one, there may be nothing for them to read.
Where it is still used every day
D&B describes the DUNS number as the key that “links to your Dun & Bradstreet business credit file” and says “potential partners, lenders, and suppliers can use it to help evaluate your business’s credibility, financial stability, and readiness for collaboration.” The score most of them look at is the PAYDEX Score, which D&B defines as “a dollar-weighted indicator intended to reflect a business’s past payment performance,” scored 1 to 100 and “calculated based upon Trade Experiences, which are records of payment experiences submitted to Dun & Bradstreet by suppliers and vendors.”
Read that definition closely, because it is the whole game: the score is built from vendors reporting how you paid them. No DUNS number, no file to report into. A DUNS number with no reporting vendors, no score either.

Takeaway: if your goal is federal work, get a Unique Entity ID from SAM.gov; if your goal is credit from private lenders and suppliers, the DUNS number is still the identifier they check.
Does my LLC need a DUNS number?
Legally, no. D&B says so itself. Practically, it depends on whether you ever want the company to borrow, lease, or buy on terms in its own name.
Picture it. An LLC that is two years old asks a supplier for a $15,000 net-30 account so it can stock up before the busy season. Same business, two versions of the file the supplier pulls:
- Before: no DUNS number. The supplier’s search returns nothing under the company name. The application comes back with a request for the owner’s Social Security number and a personal guarantee, so the $15,000 now sits against the owner’s personal credit.
- After: a DUNS number requested eighteen months earlier, with three vendors that report payment experiences to D&B. The supplier finds a file with a current address, a PAYDEX Score, and a payment history. There is now something for the company to be judged on. (Illustration only; approval decisions belong to the supplier.)
Your LLC probably wants one if
- You plan to open net-30 or net-60 vendor accounts and want them to build the company’s history rather than yours
- You expect to apply for equipment financing, a business line, or a lease in the company’s name
- A customer, marketplace, or procurement department has asked for a DUNS number as a vendor-onboarding requirement
- You want the company’s reputation to keep growing when partners or family members rotate in and out of ownership
Your LLC can skip it, for now, if
- You are a one-person service business that will never borrow or buy on terms in the LLC’s name
- Your only reason was SAM.gov, which now wants a Unique Entity ID instead
- You have not yet formed the entity or obtained an EIN; D&B asks for your legal business name, address, and structure, so those come first
Takeaway: if the company will ever ask a stranger for credit, request the DUNS number now, because a file with history is worth more than a file opened the week you need it.
How to get a DUNS number free, and how to use it
Everything below is from D&B’s own instructions, checked 2026-09-08. Nothing here requires a third party, and no third party can get you a “better” DUNS number.
- Check first. D&B tells applicants to use its D-U-N-S Number Lookup tool to see whether the business is already in its database before requesting a new one. Older companies sometimes have a number they never asked for.
- Gather the basics. D&B lists what it asks for: legal business name, business address, phone number, name of the owner, president or CEO, legal structure, year established, primary industry, and number of employees. Have the state-filed articles and the IRS EIN letter handy so the name and address match exactly.
- Request it at dnb.com. D&B: “There is no charge to receive a D-U-N-S Number. Normal processing can take up to 30 business days.” During checkout D&B offers a paid expedite, “within eight business days,” and says plainly that this “is not required.”
- Expect validation. D&B says you “may be contacted by a representative of Dun & Bradstreet to validate your information,” then the number arrives by email.
- Use it. Give the number to suppliers when you apply for terms, ask which of them report payment experiences to D&B, and put it on vendor-onboarding forms. D&B suggests listing it on your website and business cards so partners can look up your profile.
- Keep the record current. D&B: “You can view and request updates to your company’s information for free with D-U-N-S Manager.” A moved office or a new phone number that never made it into the file is exactly the stale data a lender trips over.
Watch for the upsell. D&B is a business; the same site that hands out the free number also sells expedited processing and credit-monitoring subscriptions. Its own FAQ says: “There is never a requirement that you purchase any product or services to obtain, use, or maintain your D-U-N-S Number.” Anyone else charging to “get you a DUNS” is charging for a form.
Source: D&B, Get a D-U-N-S Number (steps, required information, timelines, expedite, D-U-N-S Manager quotes), checked 2026-09-08.
Takeaway: the free path is the real path; pay D&B only if a deadline is closer than 30 business days, and pay nobody else.

Do DUNS numbers expire?
No. D&B: “Your number will never expire or change even if your business closes or is purchased by another company.” There is also no renewal fee; the same FAQ answers “Is there a charge to renew or maintain my company’s D-U-N-S Number?” with “No.” What can go stale is the information attached to it. D&B asks businesses to “manage your company’s business information to make sure that your basic information (address, phone numbers, etc.) is up to date,” and the PAYDEX Score only reflects payment experiences that vendors actually report. A number that never expires attached to a file nobody updates is how a real business looks abandoned on paper.
Are DUNS numbers public information?
Yes. D&B: “You can look up a D-U-N-S Number for your company or any company in the Dun & Bradstreet Data Cloud for free using the D-U-N-S Number Lookup Tool.” The number itself is a public identifier, which is why D&B suggests printing it on your website and business cards. The detailed credit file behind it is a different matter; D&B sells access to scores and ratings, and offers a free tier for viewing some of your own.

Takeaway: the number is permanent and public; the file behind it is only as good as the last time you or a vendor updated it.
For family businesses: one file that outlives the founders
When the next generation joins
Keep the credit on the company, not on Mom or Dad.
In a family shop, the founder’s personal credit quietly becomes the company’s. Every vendor pull, every guaranteed line, lives on one parent’s report. A DUNS number is the company’s own identity in that system, and D&B describes it as “completely separate from your personal identity.”
- Continuity. D&B says the number never changes “even if your business ... is purchased by another company,” so the file survives a handoff between generations.
- One name, one address. Apply with the exact legal name on the articles; a nickname or a home address creates a second, orphaned record.
- Pair it with structure. An LLC or corporation, its own bank account, and clean books are what make the file worth reading. The C-corp lending guide covers the structure lenders prefer.
Takeaway: for a family business the DUNS number is a succession tool as much as a credit tool; open the file under the company so it is still there when the founders step back.
Bottom line
An EIN is the IRS’s number and gets you taxes and a bank account. A DUNS number is Dun & Bradstreet’s number and gets you a business credit file that lenders and suppliers still read, even though the federal government stopped using it on April 4, 2022. It is free, it never expires, it is publicly searchable, and your LLC needs it the day it first asks a stranger for credit.

Frequently Asked Questions
Is a DUNS number the same as an EIN?
No. An EIN is a nine-digit federal tax ID issued by the IRS for tax filing and reporting. A DUNS number is a nine-digit identifier issued by Dun & Bradstreet that links to your business credit file. Neither one creates the other, and the IRS does not issue DUNS numbers.
Do I need a DUNS number for my LLC?
Not to exist or to file taxes; D&B says a DUNS number is not required to operate a business. You want one if the LLC will apply for vendor terms, equipment financing, or a business line in its own name, because that is the file lenders and suppliers pull.
Are DUNS numbers still used?
Yes for business credit; lenders, suppliers and partners still use the DUNS number to reach a company’s D&B file and PAYDEX Score. No for federal awards; since April 4, 2022, SAM.gov uses the Unique Entity ID instead of the DUNS number.
Does my LLC already have a DUNS number?
Possibly. D&B tells applicants to check its free D-U-N-S Number Lookup tool before requesting one, because a business can already be in its database. Search by company name and address; if a record exists, claim and update it rather than creating a duplicate.
How do I use a DUNS number for business credit?
Give it to suppliers when you apply for net-30 or net-60 terms, ask which ones report payment experiences to Dun & Bradstreet, and pay them on time. D&B’s PAYDEX Score is calculated from those reported trade experiences, so a DUNS number with no reporting vendors builds no score.
Do DUNS numbers expire?
No. Dun & Bradstreet states the number will never expire or change, even if the business closes or is sold, and there is no charge to renew or maintain it. The business information attached to it can go out of date, so update it for free through D-U-N-S Manager when you move or change phone numbers.
Are DUNS numbers public information?
Yes. Anyone can look up a company’s DUNS number for free with Dun & Bradstreet’s lookup tool, and D&B suggests publishing it on your website and business cards. The detailed credit scores and ratings behind the number are sold by D&B, with a free tier for some of your own.
How long does it take to get a DUNS number?
Dun & Bradstreet says normal, free processing can take up to 30 business days, and that a paid expedited request delivers the number within eight business days. Expediting is optional; the number itself costs nothing.
