LLC name search, state by state
Every state decides name availability in its own records, by its own rules. This page puts each official search one click away, with the designator the state expects and, where we have verified it, the cost of reserving a name first. Pick a state, or use the tool for any of them.
- Official search link for every state
- Designator and restricted-word check
- Reservation fee and term where verified
Pick your state
Each page: the official search (prefilled where possible), the designator rule, reservation facts if verified, and what the state asks for after the name.
What a name check can and cannot tell you
The state search shows whether the name is distinguishable from entities already on its records. That is the whole of what it decides.
A clean state search says nothing about federal or common-law trademarks. Search the USPTO before the brand goes on anything.
Registries do not talk to registrars. Check the domain alongside the state search.
Frequently asked questions
Is there one search for LLC names in every state?
No. Each state keeps its own business registry and its own search, and a name is checked only against that state's records. This page links every official search; the tool above checks the form of the name and opens the right one.
Can a website tell me a name is available?
Only the state's records can. Third-party 'available' badges are guesses about someone else's database. We never print one; we send you to the official search, prefilled where the state's URL allows it.
Why do some states need a login to search?
1 of the 51 jurisdictions here run their business search inside an account-based system. The state page says so up front, so you can create the account before you start.
Where does the information come from?
Agency names, search links, designators and reservation facts come from each state's own site and forms, per-state verification dates shown on each page (latest 2026-09-08). Annual-report figures on the linked pages were verified 2026-09-01.
Is this legal advice?
No. Vermilion Vitez is a filing-services company, not a law firm. Educational reference material; the official state site is the final word.
