All 145 business types are listed below.

Licenses and permits are set by your state and your city, not by us. A card marked Full guide lists what that business usually needs; for the rest, the note above the directory gives the general answer. Check with the agency that issues yours before you rely on it. The guides also live on their own page: LLC by industry.

See the fee for your state, or put the deadlines on a calendar once the entity exists.

How the filing works

Choose the business

Pick the type that matches what you will actually sell. The entity is the same either way, but the licenses on top of it are not.

File the formation

We file the Articles of Organization with your state for a flat $123.75. Your state fee is quoted before you pay.

Get an EIN and open an account

The IRS issues the EIN free. We file it for $41.25 if you have a U.S. SSN. Banks ask for the EIN and the formation documents together, so have both ready.

Questions people ask before filing

Do I need an LLC to start this business?
You can start as a sole proprietor without filing anything, but your personal assets sit behind the business debts. An LLC separates them, and it gives the business its own tax identity and a separate bank account. It costs $123.75 plus your state fee to form one.
Which state should I form the LLC in?
Usually the state you live and work in. Forming in a state with a lower state fee means qualifying in your own state afterwards, which costs another filing. Our formation fee is a flat $123.75 in every state, so the state fee is the part that actually changes.
How much does it really cost to get started?
Formation is $123.75 plus your state fee. A registered agent is $74.25 a year through our partner, Registered Agents Inc. An EIN filing is $41.25 if you have a U.S. SSN, $165 without one. The IRS issues the EIN itself for free, and we file it as a convenience.
Do I need a business license or permit too?
Many local businesses need one, and the issuing body is usually your city or county rather than the state. Food, health, construction and trades each have their own license rules, and so do some service businesses. Where we have a full guide for a business type, the card links to it and the guide lists each license with a link to the agency. For the other types, plan on a local business license and an EIN, and check your state's licensing board for anything more. We file the LLC and track the deadlines; the license itself is yours to get.
What happens after the LLC is filed?
Four things. Get an EIN from the IRS, open a business bank account, get a registered agent in your state, and put the recurring deadlines on a calendar. Most states also ask for an annual report and, in some cases, a periodic list of members or managers. The compliance calendar holds the dates for you.
