Sales tax in Michigan, step by step

Each rule comes from the state's own page, linked in the table below.

  1. 1

Selling in the state? Register first

    Before your first sale

A store, office, employees or inventory in Michigan (including inventory in a marketplace warehouse) means you register before you sell. Register with the Michigan Treasury, which lists any registration fee or security deposit it requires.

  2. 2

Selling from out of state? Watch the threshold

    Economic nexus

You must register once sales into Michigan pass $100,000 or 200 separate sales in the previous calendar year. What counts: gross sales into Michigan (taxable, nontaxable and exempt). Either test triggers nexus; obligation starts January 1 of the year after the threshold is exceeded.

  3. 3

    Free registration option

Michigan is a full member of the Streamlined Sales Tax agreement, so remote sellers can also register through the SST registration system, one form for every member state.

  4. 4

Count marketplace sales the state's way

    Amazon, Etsy, eBay

Michigan counts sales made through a marketplace toward the threshold. The marketplace usually collects the tax on those sales, but you may still need to register for your own website's sales.

  5. 5

Collect the right rate and file every period

    Where people get stuck

The rate is the state rate plus any local rate where the buyer receives the goods. When you register, the Michigan Treasury assigns how often you file; file every period it assigns.
