Sales tax in Kentucky, step by step

Each rule comes from the state's own page, linked in the table below.

  1. 1

Selling in the state? Register first

    Before your first sale

A store, office, employees or inventory in Kentucky (including inventory in a marketplace warehouse) means you register before you sell. Register with the Kentucky Revenue, which lists any registration fee or security deposit it requires.

  2. 2

Selling from out of state? Watch the threshold

    Economic nexus

You must register once sales into Kentucky pass $100,000 in the previous or current calendar year. What counts: gross receipts from sales into Kentucky. The 200-transaction test was removed effective 8/1/2026 per Sales Tax Institute and Avalara (Aug 2026). Kentucky DOR web pages still showed the old 200-sale language on 9/13/2026; confirm with the Department before relying on it.

  3. 3

    Streamlined Sales Tax member

    Free registration option

Kentucky is a full member of the Streamlined Sales Tax agreement, so remote sellers can also register through the SST registration system, one form for every member state.

  4. 4

Count marketplace sales the state's way

    Amazon, Etsy, eBay

Kentucky counts sales made through a marketplace toward the threshold. The marketplace usually collects the tax on those sales, but you may still need to register for your own website's sales.

  5. 5

Collect the right rate and file every period

    Where people get stuck

The rate is the state rate plus any local rate where the buyer receives the goods. When you register, the Kentucky Revenue assigns how often you file; file every period it assigns.
